When it gets very cold, your pipes may freeze. If it does, relieve the pressure in the pipe by turning on the tap so the water can be released as the pipe thaws. This will relive some of the pressure, and could prevent cracks from appearing.

Ensure that if something goes wrong in your garbage disposal that you resist any and all urges you have that might make you want to put your hands inside to fix a problem. Garbage disposals are not healthy places for hands to be, even if they are not running. Use the web to locate a diagram or users manual for your device.

You can greatly extend the life of your garbage disposal by regularly cleaning it. Prevent unsavory disposal odors through regular use of citrus peel, cherry pits and dish detergent.

Have all the plumbing repairs done in one visit. Rather than calling a plumber every time there is a minor problem, taking care of everything at once allows you to save money for additional repairs down the road. Most plumbers have an hourly rate and a flat rate for the trip: asking a plumber to fix multiple problems in one trip is cheaper than calling them more than once.

Baking Soda

You can pour baking soda down a drain followed by some vinegar if you want to keep drains clear. This should be done once a month, and a cup each of baking soda and vinegar should be used. This will cause the vigorous bubbling you may remember from the “volcano” in a grade school science project, so be sure to close the drain with a stopper. After waiting a few minutes, flush the drain with boiling water. Doing this will clear your pipes of any soap scum or hair that has accumulated.

To limit toilet problems, don’t use it as a trash can. A lot of commonly-flushed items such as tissues, cotton balls and swabs, paper towels, diapers, and sanitary napkins can clog up a toilet by failing to dissolve properly. Use the least amount of toilet paper that you can; use just as much as necessary to properly clean yourself.

Always buy a high quality fixture if you are going to replace your shower head. People try to save money by buying the least expensive shower head that is out there. Cheap shower heads are not well-made and are very likely to break. Buying a cheap shower head will end up costing you more money over the long-term.

If grout is stick within the line, it is likely useless to try cleaning it on your own. Grout can be broken up by yourself, however this generally is only a partial fix. This is much easier if your pipes are plastic, rather than metal. You might have to get a professional to get rid of this issue.

If you have to take out the clean out plug and cannot do it, you can do it this two ways. First, try using a chisel with a hammer to get the fitting loosened. If the plug itself is expendable, chiseling it into pieces and extracting them can work, too.

While you may not always have your choice of plumbers, you can use the Internet to research and review plumbers in your area. Your insurance provider may contract with a specific plumber; if you are knowledgeable about the company’s past jobs and client reviews, you will be more prepared.

There’s probably a block in the connector that goes between the sewage line and main line if there is sewage backing up in your toilet. If you have tried and cannot remove the blockage, you will need a plumber to come to your home and run the plumbing snake down into the toilet to clear the blockage.
